Understanding Isti‘ādhah: More Than Just Words

Shawwal 29, 1447/ April 17, 2026

(أَعُوذُ بِاللَّهِ )  ”isti‘adhah”  (أَعُوذُ بِاللَّهِ مِنَ الشَّيطَانِ)

“استعاذه مقام قرب ““The term استعاذه refers to a station of divine proximity — it means not only seeking refuge in Allah (SWT), but also aspiring to His nearness.”

“( الاستعاذة سببٌ للنجاة في الدنيا والآخرة)”  “(Seeking refuge is a salvation in this world and in the hereafter).”

Practical:

First step: Fleeing from Satan.

Second step: Taking refuge in the All-Merciful.

If these two matters are attained, then true isti‘ādhah has been achieved; otherwise, merely saying “A‘ūdhu billāh” has no benefit. In short, the word must reflect the state and the meaning.

After reflecting on the reality of isti‘ādhah and drawing from the Holy Qur’an, it can be said that isti‘ādhah has five essential pillars.

The first is fleeing from Satan, which corresponds to taqwā; the other pillars are: remembrance, trust in God, sincerity, and supplication.

Praise belong to Allah, who established Islam and made it easy for those who approach it, وَأَعَزَّ أَرْكَانَهُ عَلَى مَنْ غَالَبَهُ،

and gave strength to its columns against any one who tries to overpower it.

It is the brightest of all paths فَهُوَ أبْلَجُ الْمَنَاهجِ, the clearest of all passages وَ اوضِحُ الْوَلاَئِجِ. It has dignified minarets مُشْرَفُ الْمَنَارِ, bright highways مُشْرِقُ الْجَوَادِّ, burning laps مُضِيءُ الْمَصَابِيحِ, prestigious field of activity كَرَيمُ الْمِضْمارِ, and high objective رَفِيعُ الْغَايَةِ. It has a collection of race horses جَامِعُ الْحَلْبَةِ. It is approached eagerly مُتَنَافِسُ السُّبْقَةِ. Its riders are honourable شَرِيفُ الْفُرْسَانِ. Testimony (of Allah, Prophet etc.) is its way التَّصْدِيقُ مِنْهَاجُهُ, good deeds are its minarets وَالصَّالِحَاتُ مَنَارُهُ, death is its extremity وَالْمَوْتُ غَايَتُهُ, this world is its race-course وَالدُّنْيَا مِضْمارُهُ, the Day of Judgement is its horses وَالْقِيَامَةُ حَلْبَتُهُ and Paradise is its point of approach وَالْجَنَّةُ سُبْقَتُهُ. (K:106)

First Ashra – Muharram 1447

Salamun Alaykum Dear Community Members,

As we conclude the first Ashra of Muharram 1447, we humbly thank Allah (SWT) for granting us the tawfiq to mourn the unparalleled sacrifice of Imam Hussain (AS) and his noble companions, and to come together in His remembrance. We are deeply moved by the love and devotion shown, with over 1200 community members attending English & Urdu majalis every night during the Ashra to honor the Shahadat of the grandson of the Holy Prophet (SAWW). We also extend our sincere gratitude to our respected ulema, Sheikh Salim Yusufali and Molana Hassan Abbas Rizvi, and to all the reciters — whose beautiful words and voices touched our hearts throughout the Ashra.

We further offer our heartfelt thanks to our dedicated volunteers (brothers, sisters, and youth) who served tirelessly — on or behind the scenes — with patience and sincerity, embodying the spirit of Karbala in their service. We pray that Allah (SWT) and Sayyida Zahra (SA) accept your efforts and the pursa of all who came.

At the same time, we pray for the swift recovery of the injured members of our community in the tragic incident at Hussainiya Passmore on Ashura day. We strongly denounce the reckless and dangerous actions of the alleged impaired driver, and we urge the authorities to ensure justice is served and steps are taken to prevent such incidents in the future.

May Allah (SWT) accept our azadari, forgive our shortcomings, protect the azadars everywhere, and keep us steadfast on the path of truth and justice shown by Imam Hussain (AS).

With Duas,
CIG Management
